The choreographers and their pieces are as follows:
'Impressing the Grand Duke' - Simone Mousset & Elisabeth Schilling
Mousset & Schilling use the template of the traditional fairy tale to examine with humour their own situation as emerging artists in Europe. In their choreographic creation, the artist goes by the name Nymphadora, and is commissioned by the Grand Duke to find the most original idea in the world with which to create a piece, finding herself in the deep and mysterious forest of choreography.
Both choreographer-dancers, Luxembourgish Simone Mousset and Germany's Elisabeth Schilling have been working together since 2015, after having both been trained in London. Mousset took her first steps into choreography in 2014 with the creation of 'Their Past' under the 2015 'Les Émergences' programme, whilst the choreographic work of Schilling has been commissioned by various institutions including Scottish Dance Theatre Creative Learning, TEAK Helsinki and Trinity Laban.
'ARENA' - Hannah Ma
Ma's piece deals with the complementarity and contrast between Man and beast, by examining the concept of 'power' as it is perceived in the sense of physical strength but also in terms of the intellectual heritage of Man, questioning the latter's dependence on nature and animal instinct. To examine humans as they confront their end, Hannah Ma has drawn inspiration from the staging of death in historical arena fighting.
German-born but of Chinese origin, Hannah Ma has been working as a freelance artist since 2013, having studied at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna and the John Cranko School in Stuttgart. In 2014, she coordinated her first InterTanzional festival in Trier and in the Greater Region and subsequently developed the Euro-Arab network H.E.R.O.E.S.
'Quand le Silence Parle' (When Silence Speaks) - Giovanni Zazzera & Sergio Mel
As the title suggests, this project explores what silence has to say, showing how the concept can denote reverence, happiness or serenity, or instill fear and prompt people to seek speech as a means of breaking it and defending themselves. Silence can be used to capture a sound, feel a presence and receive answers, but as speech is born, silence is killed. The two choreographers have used silence as inspiration, whilst drawing on cultural differences to communicate and understand what lies beyond it.
Italian Giovanni Zazzera was trained at the Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg where he obtained his Higher Diploma in Jazz Dance. In 2013, he received the Lëtzebuerger Danzpräis and has since been creating his own pieces. Meanwhile, Sergio Mel was born and trained in Brazil and has since worked for several international projects, gaining a multicultural and multidisciplinary artistic background.
'As You Want' - Baptiste Hilbert & Catarina Barbosa
'As You Want' has been constructed in much the same way as a pyramid, with a strong, universal base decribing the common history of every living being on the planet, as well as a centre where the same story is told in a unique story according to the individual. By showing how the differences are evoked through speech and the body, the piece aims to show how people all come from the same place, although individual life experiences shape each one of us into different characters.
Born in Arlon, Baptiste Hilbert was trained at the EPSEDANSE school in Montpellier, France before joining postgraduate performance company of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, VERVE13 in Leeds. His training was completed at Geneva Junior Ballet. Portugal-born Catarina Barbosa also became familiar with contemporary dance at the Geneva Junior Ballet through creations by Gustavo Ramirez, Thierry Mandalain and Stijn Celis, among others.
'Zement' (Cement) - Jill Crovisier
In her performance, Jill Crovisier takes concrete as a construction material and deconstructs it as a concept, showing how it is the chemical result of a mixture of natural substances, but is always used by humans to build walls. This latter process can be used to keep in or protect, but also to exclude, confine and destroy. The piece draws on events from around the world on an extended time scale, focusing on the hand as a means to build up and knock down, as well as a part of the body refelctive of the soul.
Crovisier is one of Luxembourg's own, having been born, taken her studies and worked with a choreographer all in Luxembourg before training in New York and France to become a dance teacher. She joined the 'International Dance Journey' programme in 2012, creating her own JC movement dance company and JC movement production in 2013.
