Details: On 27 and 28 February 2016, the Choir of the University of Luxembourg will be presenting a composition by Philippe Partridge as a variation on a Latin poem.
Written in the thirteenth century, 'Stabat Mater' expresses the pain of Christ's Mother when faced with the death of her son and has been set to music by numerous composers. Although anchored in Christian tradition, the Latin poetry of the text transcends beliefs or non-beliefs, cultures and origin to examine the ubiquitous nature of suffering in its varied context.
It is through this concept of recognising the suffering of others to help them through it that French-American composer Philippe G. Partridge has developed the music to which the text of the Stabat Mater has been set, allowing the fundamental message to emerge. Philippe G. Partridge was born in Paris but grew up and trained musically in Italy, moving to Luxembourg in 2007 where he has written arrangements for the Théâtre National du Luxembourg and the Grand Théâtre. He now teaches at the Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg.
Composed for mezzo-soprano, choir and a intrumental percussion ensemble of vibraphone, marimbe and timpani and bass clarinet and bass, this piece will be performed by the singers of the University choir under the direction of Julia Pruy and by mezzo-soprano Luise Partrigde-Mauro, with Laurent Clément (vibraphone), Michel Mootz and Paul Mootz (marimba), Paul Altmann (drums), Eric Engel (bass clarinet) and Patricio Banda (bass).
