Details: The Luxembourg Connection: Authors Pembrey and Alexander Launch in Chapter 1 on 4 September
Luxembourg has inspired two authors in quite different ways: Daniel Pembrey’s The Candidate is a modern conspiracy thriller set in the city, while Luxembourg-raised Piers Alexander has taken his experiences of growing up as a foreigner and translated them into 1688 England for his historical novel The Bitter Trade.
Pembrey and Alexander are launching their books in Luxembourg with a reading and Q&A at Chapter 1, at 18:30 on Thursday 4 September. The evening is being moderated by Geoff Thompson of the Luxembourg Chronicle, media partner for the event.
ABOUT DANIEL PEMBREY AND THE CANDIDATE: A Luxembourg Thriller - When headhunter becomes the hunted
Daniel Pembrey is a bestselling writer of crime thrillers and suspense stories including Simon Sixsmith, The Woman Who Stopped Traffic, and The Harbour Master. Whilst working for a large Seattle-based company in Luxembourg, he was inspired to write The Candidate.
Synopsis: Nick Thorneycroft is a British headhunter working in Luxembourg. His company asks him to recruit a high-flying executive for the company’s Russian business. The best candidate turns out to be smart, beautiful… and mysterious. Soon the effects of Russia’s political upheaval, and the arrival of an ex-girlfriend who won’t leave him alone, make Nick’s Luxembourg life increasingly perilous. Worlds collide in this gripping, atmospheric tale.
“A very readable Euro thriller with a very strong sense of setting. This has shades of Elmore Leonard, but it’s also up to date, with an insight into modern Euro-crime which is all too accurate” - Katharine Quarmby, Award-winning writer, TV producer and journalist.
“Daniel Pembrey tells a cracking tale with verve and style” - Susan Hill, Booker Prize short-listed writer, and author of ghost story The Woman In Black.
ABOUT PIERS ALEXANDER AND THE BITTER TRADE - Heretic. Smuggler. Rebel.
Raised in Luxembourg and educated at the European School, Piers Alexander is an author and serial media entrepreneur who lives in London. The Bitter Trade was awarded the PEN Factor Prize.
Synopsis: In 1688, torn by rebellions, England lives under the threat of a Dutch invasion. Redheaded Calumny Spinks is the lowliest man in an Essex backwater: half-French and still unapprenticed at seventeen, yet he dreams of wealth and title. When his father’s violent past resurfaces, Calumny’s desperation leads him to flee to London and become a coffee racketeer. He has just three months to pay off a blackmailer and save his father’s life - but his ambition and talent for mimicry pull him into a conspiracy against the King himself.
“A dazzling, playful historical adventure” - Rebecca Swift, Chair of the Pen Factor Jury
“The ambitious, cheeky Calumny Spinks is a great guide through the sensory overload of 17th century London, in an adventure that combines unexpected insights with just the right amount of rollicking ribaldry” - Christopher Fowler, author of the Bryant and May novels
“A fantastic debut novel” - Robert Elms, BBC Radio London
