Jannie has toured the BeNeLux on numerous occasions since the early nineties. During those years he was accompanied by the late Christa Steyn – re-nowned pianist, composer and musical arranger with whom Jannie worked for a period of 25 years and to whom he dedicates this programme which is being performed in 18 towns between 22 November and 22 December in the BeNeLux and Germany.
Jannie started his music career during the seventies as founder member of an Afrikaans folk group called Trilogie. In 2011 Jannie celebrated his 40 year-long involvement with Afrikaans music by touring South Africa with the production Onderweg (‘On the Road’). The script was written by well-known South African writer P G du Plessis and while most of the programme is in Afrikaans, songs in French, Dutch and English by Jacques Brel, Bertolt Brecht, Jules De Corte and the legendary South African songwriter Koos du Plessis are also included.
For the BeNeLux concerts, Jannie presents an adapted version of Onderweg while after interval the programme consists of a light-hearted look at a century of Afrikaans music – Van Sarie MaraiS tot Nu. Apart from his singing prowess, Jannie also shows his talent as an actor with fine cabaret skills and a knack for comical sketches. Jannie is accompanied on piano and accordion by brilliant young composer/arranger Clinton Zerf and one of the foremost cellists in South Africa, Susan Mouton, while he himself plays the guitar.
Jannie released a new CD during October 2013, the songs which he has chosen reflecting on stage productions and work of the past ten years with close musical friends like Christa Steyn, Lucas Maree and Louis van Rensburg who all have passed away in the recent past. Other gems which are included are songs by Jules De Corte, Koos du Plessis and Robert Long, to name but a few.
By courtesy of Durbanville Hills Winelands situated close to Cape Town, the audience will have the opportunity to taste some of the wines at the concert.
