The Embassy of Japan in Luxembourg has announced a new initiative: "Jeudi Japonais" (Japanese Thursday).

From November to December 2024, on different Thursdays, the public will be able to enjoy Japanese culture and the arts at the Cercle Cité in Luxembourg-Ville.

This initiative will introduce three different arts, on five different workshop times and dates.

Workshops

Nihon Buyo - Japanese Dance Workshop by Ms Maki Ito, accredited master of Wakayagi School of Nihon-buyo: workshop for children and parents/guardians on Thursday 21 November 2024 from 14:00 to 15:00; workshop for adults in on Thursday 28 November 2024 from 14:00 to 15:00. Language: French and English.
Nihon-buyō (日本舞踊, lit. "Japanese dance") refers to the classical Japanese performing art of dance with Kimono. It is one of the traditional dances most people imagine when thinking about Japan. Ms Maki Ito will teach participants how to dance this style and about its background in Japanese history.

Shodo - Japanese Calligraphy Workshop by Ms Iri, calligraphy teacher, on Thursday 5 December 2024 from 14:00 to 15:00 (Workshop A- first of two identical courses) and from 16:00 to 17:00 (B). Language: English. Further details: https://cerclecite.lu/fr/event/shodo-atelier-de-calligraphie-japonaise
Japanese calligraphy (書道, shodō) is a form of artistic calligraphy in the Japanese language. Ms Iri will show participants how to write Japanese calligraphy with ink and brushes. This course is meant as an introduction for new beginners.

Bonsai - Lecture & Demonstration by Mr Jean-Pierre Reitz, President of Bonsai Frënn Minett Déifferdeng, on Thursday 19 December 2024 from 12:30 to 13:30. Language: French. Further details: https://cerclecite.lu/fr/event/bonsai-conference-demonstration
Mr Reitz will explain and present the history and intricacies of bonsai, as well how to take care of them. In parallel, he will show participants how to create a pre bonsai from simple nursery stock.
