Luxembourg's Ministry of Education, Children and Youth has announced that the overall success rate in vocational training stood at 84% for the 2020-21 summer session.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, 84% of students in vocational training passed their final assessment and internships and successfully completed their final project.

For young people pursuing a vocational capacity certificate (certificat de capacité professionnelle - CCP), the success rate was also close to 84%; those working towards a vocational aptitude diploma (Diplôme d'aptitude professionnelle - DAP) had a pass rate of more than 84.50%; almost 83% of those studying for a technician's diploma (diplôme de technicien - DT) were successful.

Whilst the details of successes by training show some fluctuations between 2019 and 2021, stability and progression characterise most results.

According to the Education Ministry, these high success rates are the result of the adaptation and flexibility efforts made by students, teachers, and professionals, as well as a maximum of courses and learning periods being upheld during the pandemic. Various complementary measures also contributed to the resistance of vocational training to the impact of COVID-19, namely:

  • the extension of the deadline to search for an apprenticeship position from 1 November to 31 December 2020;
  • the introduction of a one-off premium of €1,500 to €5,000 per apprentice for training companies hiring one or more apprentices in 2020-21;
  • the opening of more full-time classes in 2020-21 that did not require an apprenticeship position;
  • schools being authorised to act as training companies.

In addition, the class of 2020-21 was the first in Luxembourg to receive a digital certificate of achievement recognised at European level: the Europass Digital Credentials. Luxembourg is playing a pioneering role in the use of this new tool developed by the European Commission, serving as a model for good practice in this area.
