Luxembourg’s Human Migration Documentation Centre (Centre de Documentation sur les Migrations Humaines - CDMH) has announced details of a current exhibition and an upcoming day of commemoration in Dudelange.
CDMH is currently hosting an exhibition on "Fruit trees, railway tunnels and seamless tubes. Luxembourg presence in Romania (1880-1950)" at Gare-Usines de Dudelange. The exhibition is part of the annual General Assembly of the Association of European Migration Institutions and of a partnership with the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH) of the University of Luxembourg.
The project coordinated by Philippe Henri Blasen, postdoctoral researcher at C2DH, reveals a Luxembourg presence in Romania, largely unknown until now. This migration is believed to have occurred through the movement of workers in international professional networks, almost entirely dissolved at the time of the Cold War. The exhibition honours engineers and similar professionals (railways, steel industry, glass industry, oil industry) and horticulturists. It also pays tribute to women, who worked mainly in education.
The exhibition is open every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday until Sunday 16 February 2025, from 15:00 to 18:00 (except for CDMH winter closure period from 22 December 2024 to 5 January 2025).
Moreover, on Sunday 10 November 2024 at 11:00, CDMH is holding a commemorative event ("No Pasarán" Day 2024) to honour the brigadiers who left Luxembourg for the Spanish War (1936-1938). Interested parties are asked to meet in front of the NO PASARÁN monument at Gare-Usines de Dudelange.
