The Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall (Mullerthal nature and geopark) has announced that it is organising various activities in Nommern, near Larochette, this Saturday as part of International Bat Night.
In Luxembourg, there are a total of eighteen species of bats, of which only the aquatic bat is not considered endangered. It is therefore important to actively protect bats and provide as much information as possible about these fascinating animals. With the aim of raising awareness among as wide an audience as possible, the Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats, or EUROBATS, launched the first European Bat Night 25 years ago and has been organising this event across Europe annually ever since.
This year, the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall is hosting its "Bat Night" in Nommern on Saturday 17 July 2021. From 18:00 on, there will be different actitivites for children and adults alike. For instance, there will be a rally for children, the possibility of building a bat box, a conference on the biology and protection of bats in Luxembourg and even a "Bat Walk".
The aim of this event is to raise awareness about bats and break down any prejudices that individuals may have towards these mammals.
Programme
From 18:00 on, activities will be offered for children aged 4 to 14. These include a rally, various games, the construction of a bat box and making seed bombs from night-blooming flowers. At 19:30, there will be two conferences: Jacques Pir, the national bat coordinator, will give a conference on the ecology, threats and protection of bats; Berdorf district forester Frank Adam will then discuss bats and forest management.
