The Christmas markets in Luxembourg's south region are the latest events to fall victim to COVID-19 in the Grand Duchy.

The municipalities of Dudelange, Differdange and Esch-sur-Alzette confirmed on Friday that their respective Christmas markets will not go ahead this year in light of rising coronavirus cases and the accompanying restrictions.

In Dudelange, the college of mayors and aldermen took the decision to cancel its Christmas festivities, initially scheduled to take place from 5 to 23 December 2020. The cancellation applies to the traditional and medieval Christmas markets, the winter fair, the Jugendwanter of the Maison des Jeunes and the Saint-Nicolas procession.

Similarly, the market in Differdange, due to take place on the same dates as in Dudelange, has been cancelled.

The City of Esch-sur-Alzette was the latest municipality to announce the cancellation of its traditional Christmas market, which was supposed to take place from 27 November to 23 December 2020. Nevertheless, a variety of festive decorations, lights, music and small concerts will be held in Rue de l'Alzette in the city centre.
