At the week-end, Romania defeated Luxembourg 4-1 in the Europe/Africa zone, Group II 1st round match in the men's tennis competition at the Sala Polivalenta in Piatra Neamt, Romania.
Last April, Luxembourg had defeated Macedonia in the Europe III promotion play-off, sending them back to Europe / Africa Group II in 2018.
While Ugo Nastasi got Luxembourg off to a winning start on Friday with a 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 win over Nicolae Frunza, that was to be the only success for the visiting side. Christophe Tholl lost 3-6, 2-6 to Marius Copil to leave the score 1-1 going into the week-end.
On Saturday, Raphael Calzi and Robi Tholl struggled against Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau, winning just one game in a 0-6, 1-6 defeat to leave Romania 2-1 up going into the reverse singles matches on Sunday.
Both Luxembourg players struggled, with Ugo Nastasi going down 1-6, 1-6 to Marius Copil, and Christophe Tholl not faring much better in a 3-6, 2-6 defeat to Bogdan Borza.
Team captain Jean Goudenbour must now pick the team ranked #64 in the world up for the Europe/Asia Group II relegation play-offs over the week-end of 7-8 April 2018.
