On Saturday 20 October 2018, the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg open tennis tournament concluded at Kockelscheuer, with top-seeded Germany's Julia Goerges winning the singles championship by defeating qualifier Belinda Bencic from Switzerland in front of a packed audience that included members of the public, politicians and member of the Grand Ducal family.
The final score was 6-4, 7-5. Earlier this year, the 29 year-old from Germany defeated Caroline Wozniack in the final of the Auckland tournament in New Zealand, and got to the semi-final at Wimbledon this year. This was her 6th appearance at the tournament in Luxembourg, and her first win here, having reached the final in 2010. The is currently ranked #14 in the world.
In the women's doubles final, the wild-card Belgian pairing of Greet Minnen and Alison Van Uytvanck overcame the spirited challenge of Luxembourg's own Mandy Minella who was playing alongside Vera Lapko of Belarus. The first set was a tight affair with the Belgian pairing winning the tie-break before powering their was to a 7-6, 6-2 win.
The 2019 tournament will be played between 12 - 20 October 2019, with the finals to be played on Sunday.
