The Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) has reported an increase in the number of involuntary or abusive calls to the 112 emergency number in recent days.

For several days and following a recent update of the operating system of mobile phones using Android, the number of involuntary/abusive 112 calls has increased significantly. According to the CGDIS, the update of the Android 13 operating system brought with it a "shortcut" function allowing users to call the emergency services more quickly. This shortcut appears to have triggered a significant number of involuntary 112 calls.

The CGDIS noted a 30% increase in involuntary calls and recalled that such calls have a significant impact on the work of operators and could lead to delays in dealing with real emergencies.

The problem, affecting many countries, has been identified and the latest update of smartphones running Android has reportedly solved this problem.

Nevertheless, the CGDIS has asked mobile phone users to check if their Android operating system is up to date and, if not, to launch the update manually.
