According to a new report by Chef’s Pencil, an international food magazine that reports on industry trends, Luxembourg has the second highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants per capita in the world.
Switzerland has long claimed the title of the country with the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants per capita, but according to this new report, Japan ranks 1st and Luxembourg 2nd, while Switzerland comes in 3rd place. Belgium and Malta round out the Top 5.
Luxembourg is home to the second-highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world and the first in Europe. The Grand Duchy counts nine Michelin-starred restaurants, including a two-star Michelin restaurant for a population of just 625,000.
Overall, France continued to hold on to its title as the country with the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world. According to the latest Michelin Guide, the country has 632 Michelin-starred restaurants, of which 74 establishments hold two coveted Michelin stars, while 29 restaurants earned three stars. However, in terms of the highest concentration (i.e. highest number per capita) of Michelin-starred establishments, France ranked 6th.
Chef’s Pencil analysed the number of Michelin-starred restaurants reported on the official Michelin Guide website. For per capita rankings, they included countries that are either fully covered or have multiple regions covered by the guide. Where the coverage was limited to a few regions, states or prefectures, the calculations only took into account the population for the covered areas.
