Festival Events Asbl, organiser of the British & Irish Film Festival Luxembourg, have announced a St Brigid's Day screening of the documentary film "Housewife of the Year" on Thursday 30 January 2025 at 19:00 at Ciné Utopia in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg.

St Brigid's Day in Ireland is celebrated on 1 February which marks the first day of spring in the Celtic Calendar. St Brigid is one of Ireland's three patron saints; many people may know of the four-armed St Brigid’s Cross made out of straw. St Brigid's Day has been a public holiday in Ireland since 2023, with the holiday being held on the first Monday in every February. It recognises the contribution of Irish women to the world, as well as how their place in society has been historically undervalued.

The "Housewife of the Year" documentary shows the empowerment of women and celebrates their place in society.

Synopsis: It tells the story of Ireland’s treatment of women through the prism of a unique, surreal, live-televised competition, that has to be seen to be believed: a generation of Irish women competed in front of a live audience for the title of “Housewife of the Year”.  The former contestants share their direct experiences of marriage bars, lack of contraception, Magdalene laundries, financial vulnerability, boredom and shame and, of course, of being contestants in the competition. It is a poignant, often hilarious, uplifting story of a resilient generation of women, and how they changed a country.

Housewife of the Year won Best Irish Documentary Award at the Galway Film Fleadh 2024.
