Phase III works calendar; Credit: CFL

Luxembourg's railway company, the CFL, has presented details of the third phase of major engineering works being carried out on the country's rail network this year; this phase will run from 17 July to 14 September 2021.

During the summer holidays, the CFL will continue its work on the extension, modernisation and maintenance of the rail network. The objective of these works, according to the CFL, is to continue building for the mobility of tomorrow for CFL customers. To guarantee customer travel while continuing to move forward as quickly as possible with works, the 2021 schedule has been split into four phases.

Phase III works:

Line 10 (Luxembourg - Troisvierges - Gouvy): Exchange hubs for the north of the country

The construction of exchange hubs near customers' places of work and residence is one of the CFL's objectives to contribute to the attractiveness of public transport. For three weeks from mid-July to early August 2021, the CFL will close various sections of line 10 (Luxembourg - Troisvierges - Gouvy) to allow the progress of work at the level of the exchange hubs of Mersch and Ettelbruck which are aimed at improving the connection of the north of the country and in particular of the “Nordstad” to public transport. Work will be carried out between Mersch and Ettelbruck, where the power supply system will be strengthened to ensure that electricity needs are met, even during particularly intense periods. Ettelbruck station is also undergoing major changes: catenary and civil engineering work will take place to support this transformation. Sections concerned: Luxembourg - Ettelbruck; Ettelbruck - Diekrich; Luxembourg - Troisvierges; Wiltz - Kautenbach; Luxembourg - Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg.

Lines 10 (Luxembourg - Troisvierges - Gouvy) and 30 (Luxembourg - Wasserbillig - Trèves): Transformation of Luxembourg station continues

During the summer period, the CFL will continue its work concerning the extension and modernisation of Luxembourg station where the main lines of the rail network converge. Alongside the construction work on the new V and VI platforms as well as the associated tracks (commissioning: December 2021), the CFL will supplement this capacity gain by redeveloping the north end of the station. Optimising the flow of trains to / from the north and east for greater reliability, this step will require the renewal, or even the redevelopment of all the rails, sleepers and switches north of the station which, at the end of the work, will dedicate tracks by rail line and will be equipped with four additional tracks at the platform, the first of which was already put into service in 2019. In addition, work to extend the underground passages will allow customers to access the new platforms from the next timetable change (December 2021). The closure, with an impact on lines 10 and 30, will also allow progress to be made on the level of work on the installation of the new Luxembourg station footbridge, which will provide barrier-free access to the station's railway platforms at the end of 2021. Sections concerned : Luxembourg - Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg; Luxembourg - Sandweiler-Contern.

Lines 60 (Luxembourg - Esch-sur-Alzette - Pétange) and 90 (Luxembourg - Bettembourg - Thionville): A footbridge and extended platforms for Bettembourg station

Works in the Bettembourg station are part of the CFL modernisation programme. In order to provide barrier-free access to this important station south of the capital, the CFL will carry out work for the construction of a new footbridge. At the same time, the CFL will take advantage of the summer closure to temporarily extend two platforms to a length of 250 metres to accommodate longer trains and therefore offer more seats to customers at Bettembourg station. Sections concerned: Bettembourg - Volmerange-les-Mines; Bettembourg - Esch-sur-Alzette; Luxembourg - Eschsur-Alzette; Luxembourg - Thionville; Luxembourg - Bettembourg.

Lines 60 (Luxembourg - Esch-sur-Alzette - Pétange) and 70 (Luxembourg - Pétange - Rodange - Athus - Longwy): Work for a more efficient Rodange station

Rodange station accommodates both line 60 and line 70 trains. In order to optimise fluidity inside this station, especially during rush hour, major work will be carried out during the third time phase of 2021 to redevelop the east end of the station. These works include, among other things, the reconfiguration of the track plan of this veritable hub in the southwest of the country which, at the end of the works, will dedicate two exclusive platform tracks to each of the lines running there. Added to this is the provision of an additional platform track which will certainly relieve this particularly busy station. Sections concerned: Pétange - Rodange; Pétange - Athus; Pétange - Longwy.

Line 60 (Luxembourg - Esch-sur-Alzette - Pétange): Rehabilitation work

To allow the realisation of rehabilitation works at the level of the road bridge (A13) of the "bow-string" type going beyond the railway tracks by the Roads Administration, the CFL will also organise closures to allow this work to take place safely. Section concerned: Bettembourg - Esch-sur-Alzette.

During the closures of the Ettelbruck - Troisvierges section, the CFL will provide free bicycle shuttles on this section. To reserve a seat, fill out the form on www.cfl.lu.

In addition, the CFL carsharing offer is available in around 50 stations in the Grand Duchy, with more than 100 vehicles at customers' disposal. Find more information on the Flex offer, prices and practical terms on flex.lu.
