Luxembourg's Ministry of Education, Children and Youth has launched the second edition of the "Upbooking" campaign aimed at giving school textbooks a second life.

The ministry noted that the end of the school year also marks the end of the use of many textbooks. Often, these are condemned to gather dust in cupboards at home or are thrown in the rubbish bin - an action which has repercussions on the environment.

To further encourage secondary school students to give a second life to textbooks they no longer use and thus reduce their environmental impact, the Education Ministry is launching the second edition of the "Upbooking" campaign.

Students are invited to recirculate their old schoolbooks by giving them to other students who will use them for the coming school year, and thus help reduce the significant volumes of paper, plastic and ink needed in the production of school textbooks.

Launched in 2023, the upbooking.lu platform is now becoming a real school book exchange, according to the ministry: it allows secondary school students to donate textbooks, but also to search for them.

The new features of the upbooking.lu platform are part of the ongoing effort to keep as many schoolbooks in circulation as possible in order to help protect the environment.

Since the introduction of free textbooks for secondary education in 2018/2019, the Education Ministry has also offered students who collect textbooks from a former student a voucher for 50% of the new value of the textbooks in question.
