On Tuesday 2 July 2024, Luxembourg's Ministry of Education, Children and Youth presented the results of the 2024 summer session of secondary school leaving exams.
These results include those of public and private secondary schools following the national curriculum, as well as those of students following evening classes and eBac courses and those at Schengen-Lyzeum across the border in Perl (Germany).
The overall pass rate remained stable compared to 2023, at 74%.
A total of 3,743 students (2,121 female and 1,622 male) sat their secondary school leaving exams in summer 2024. 2,788 students (74%) passed these exams.
The postponement rate was 15%, thus remaining unchanged compared to 2023. 575 students will thus have to sit one or more postponement tests in September 2024. The failure rate amounted to 10% (11% in 2023).
In classical secondary schools, the pass rate stood at 85% (81% in 2023). The postponement rate was 10% (12% in 2023), whilst the failure rate was 5% (7% in 2023).
In general secondary schools, the pass rate stood at 66% (69% in 2023). The postponement rate was 20% (18% in 2023), whilst the failure rate remained stable over one year at 14%.
According to the ministry, comparative analysis by gender showed that young women performed slightly better than young men in classical secondary education (86% pass rate for young women compared to 84% for young men). In general secondary education, the pass rates stood at 66% for both young women and young men.
The number of students who obtained an "excellent" grade (average equal to or greater than 52 points) stood at 146 in 2024 (i.e. 5% of passes). 134 students in classical secondary education and twelve students in general secondary education obtained this distinction.
