
On Friday 16 June 2023, Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, received British Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Europe, Leo Docherty, for a working meeting in the Grand Duchy.
Minister Asselborn and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State Docherty welcomed the countries' "excellent" bilateral relations and provided an update on the implementation of the joint declaration on cooperation between Luxembourg and the UK, signed by Minister Asselborn and his British counterpart James Cleverly, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, in London on 11 May 2023.
In this sense, the working visit of the British Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Europe was an opportunity to discuss the prospects for the development of bilateral relations, particularly in the economic and financial field as well as in research and the mobility of young people and students.
Minister Asselborn and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State Docherty also discussed EU-UK relations, with both sides agreeing on the importance of establishing a stable relationship based on shared values and interests.
Moreover, the working meeting allowed for an in-depth exchange of views on issues related to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. In this context, both sides reaffirmed their unfailing support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.
The collaboration of Luxembourg and the UK within NATO was also on the agenda, particularly in the run-up to the NATO summit in Vilnius on 11 and 12 July 2023. In this context, Minister Asselborn and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State Docherty highlighted their countries' firm commitment to collective defence and to strengthening European and transatlantic relations.
