The 2019 European elections will take place across the EU later this month, from 23-26 May; Luxembourg residents will go to the ballot box on Sunday 26 May.

Every five years, EU citizens from the 28 member states (providing the UK does not leave before the elections) directly elect their preferred political representatives to sit in the European Parliament. Once again this year, voters will elect a total of 751 Members of the European Parliament or MEPs (705 in the case of Brexit), of which six will be from Luxembourg.

The elected MEPs from the different member states sit together according to their political affiliation, rather than nationality. These are the European People's Party (EPP), the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), the European United Left - Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL), the Greens/European Free Alliance (Greens/EFA), the Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy (EFDD) and the Europe of Nations and Freedom group.

Current Luxembourg MEPs are: Georges Bach (CSV; EPP); Mady Delvaux (LSAP; S&D); Frank Engel (CSV; EPP); Charles Goerens (DP; ALDE); Christophe Hansen (CSV; EPP); Tilly Metz (déi Gréng; Greens/EFA).

Going to vote is compulsory in Luxembourg and citizens from other EU countries residing in Luxembourg can also, if registered, vote for Luxembourg MEPs in the elections. The same applies to Luxembourg nationals residing in another EU country. Applications for postal votes closed on Thursday 2 May 2019.
