The Musée National d'Archéologie, d'Histoire et d'Art (MNAHA) has announced the arrival of a triptych by 20th-century Irish-born British painter Francis Bacon (1909-1992) at the Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart in Luxembourg-Ville.
The iconic work has been added to the museum's permanent collection of modern and contemporary art as part of a two-year loan.
As of Monday 1 July 2024, visitors to the museum can discover the triptych Three Studies for Portrait of George Dyer (1963), which depicts Francis Bacon's lover and muse, George Dyer.
The work occupies pride of place in the first room of the museum's permanent Collections/Revelations display, dedicated specifically to portraits.
This triptych is also the first work of art listed on ARTEX Global Markets, a stock exchange that aims to democratise investment in art.
“The loan to the museum of a publicly traded Francis Bacon [work] inaugurates a new type of private-public partnership in the world of the arts. It allows us to present works that would otherwise not be accessible to the general public - and at zero cost to the taxpayer,” noted Michel Polfer, Director of MNAHA.
From the start of the new school year, the Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart plans to offer a specific programme of activities (visits, conferences, workshops, etc.) around this work and the artist, who once said: “Triptychs are the thing I like doing most .”
The MNAHA is a cultural institute that manages three museum sites, including the Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart, and two research centres in Luxembourg.
