On Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 May 2022, 41 museums across the Grand Duchy opened their doors for the 25th edition of Luxembourg Museum Days.
A total of 15,265 visitors (all places combined) took advantage of this opportunity to (re)discover the country's museums. This figure represents a slight increase of 4.42% compared to last year.
In Luxembourg City, five new exhibitions opened their doors ahead of Luxembourg Museum Days: "Le passé colonial du Luxembourg" (Luxembourg's colonial past) and "The Rape of Europe" at the National Museum of History and Art (MNHA); "The Everted Capital (Katabasis)" and "Repräsentantinnen (Représentantes)" (female representatives) at Casino Luxembourg; "Lynette Yiadom-Boaky. Fly In League With The Night" at Mudam Luxembourg.
In addition to their permanent and temporary exhibitions, the various museums offered a varied programme across these two days. Highlights included "Deary Steel" by Cecilia Bengolea, a set of works combining dance, performance, sculpture and video installation, presented at Mudam Luxembourg and at the base C in Esch-Belval. At Museum "A Possen", a musical encounter with old fabrics awaited visitors, whilst the Slate Museum celebrated the official inauguration of a train. At Museum Thillenvogtei, visitors were able to relive an old school lesson in an authentic setting with a period teacher, while beer lovers were able to attend the public brewing of an "Éisleker Cervoise", a recipe specially created for the occasion. At the National Museum of Military History (MNHM) in Diekirch, a presentation of military vehicles in the courtyard of the museum awaited visitors and the National Museum of Resistance and Human Rights in Esch-sur-Alzette welcomed the public with its new temporary exhibition "Idée de Paix" (Idea of Peace) by Belgian expressionist Frans Maserel. Adults were also able to take part in the open-air painting workshop at the Victor Hugo House - Literary Museum.
Moreover, various special guided tours were organised. For instance, the National Mining Museum in Rumelange organised a preview of a digital iPad visit in the galleries of Mine Walert. An intergenerational and interactive visit of "The Family of Man" exhibition was organised at Clervaux Castle, whilst visitors could go on a guided visit of the "Work in Progress" exhibition at the Wine Museum in Ehnen. In Luxembourg City, visits with artist-in-residence Lynn Klemmer at the Casino Display were offered, as well as musical guided tours at Villa Vauban entitled "Meet Me at the Museum", specially created for older people and their families, with an ensemble of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg (OPL).
Various activities for children completed the offer at the weekend. At the Kuturhuef, a new children's booklet accompanying the exhibitions was presented. At the General Patton Memorial Museum, a workshop on the question of how a rocket flies took place, whilst at the Country Museum Binsfeld, children could play the game "Bauer ärgere dich nicht" (farmer don't fret) in real size. At the Tudor Museum, children assembled a small robot. At the National Museum of Natural History (naturmusée), they tried to reconstruct a complete skeleton with the bones of a real dinosaur.
The 26th edition of Luxembourg Museum Days will take place in May 2023.
