The Automobile Club of Luxembourg (ACL) has reported that it, recently organised a "Lighting and Tyres" campaign in more than ten Luxembourg municipalities, in partnership with the Luxembourg Road Safety Association.
The ACL checked a total of 5,307 vehicles, up 22.1% from 2023 when 4,311 vehicles were checked. 1,138 vehicles required adjustment of their dipped headlights with 164 bulbs found to be faulty.
Moreover, 413 vehicles (7.8% of cars checked) were fitted with non-compliant tyres, which is a major source of concern for the ACL. The latter reminded motorists that tyres are the only point of contact between the vehicle and the road. It is therefore essential that they are in good condition to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers.
Dany Neves, Head of the ACL Diagnostic Centre, emphasised: “A well-lit and well-equipped car with tyres is essential to ensure everyone’s safety on the road. Our awareness-raising actions aim to remind people that these elements, often underestimated, play a crucial role in preventing accidents”.
Mr Neves added: “With more than 5,000 vehicles checked in one month during this new Lighting and Tyres campaign, we exceeded our objective. One of the keys to this success was our ability to get as close as possible to motorists.” He went on to thank the partners who supported this campaign, including shopping centres and municipalities which provided car park space, and the Société Nationale du Contrôle Technique (SNCT) and Autoglas for checking vehicle windshields.
The ACL recalled that, according to Luxembourg law, winter tyres or all-season tyres marked "M&S" are mandatory as soon as winter conditions set in, i.e. when there is snow, sleet or ice. This regulation is not linked to a specific date. Motorists can also refer to the "Highway Code" for information including tyre type and thickness.
