On Thursday 13 February 2025, Luxembourg’s Minister of Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, met with Belgian Minister of Mobility, Climate and Environmental Transition, Jean-Luc Crucke, in Brussels, Belgium.

A statement issued by Luxembourg’s Ministry of Mobility and Public Works confirmed that Ministers Backes and Crucke discussed the challenges of cross-border mobility between the two countries, as well as the projects and initiatives that pursue the objective of streamlining and improving this mobility. The ministers highlighted the good cooperation between Luxembourg and Belgium on these issues.

Ministers Backes and Crucke are reported to have confirmed their desire to continue the necessary efforts to improve the rail relationship between the Belgian and Luxembourg capitals, with 2029 as the objective for the completion of infrastructure works on the Belgian side. Both ministers plan to meet again at the Belgian-Luxembourg border in early June 2025, as part of a rail working group meeting, in order to better understand the situation on the ground.

The meeting also provided the ministers with an opportunity to discuss the proposed project to widen the A6 motorway between Luxembourg City and the Belgian border to three lanes in each direction, with a lane reserved for public transport and carpooling, as well as the creation of cross-border cycle paths. These developments will provide an additional alternative to current mobility choices.

The statement added that the ministers discussed the project, first proposed 20 years ago, to create a Park and Ride car park in Viville (Belgium), that Minister Crucke reportedly wishes to relaunch. This development would benefit the 54,000 Belgian cross-border workers that travel to Luxembourg daily.
