On Wednesday 21 August 2024, Luxembourg’s Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, accompanied by representatives of the National Roads Administration, Luxtram and the national railway company, CFL, visited the major construction site of the Howald multimodal transport hub.

This new multimodal hub is a key point for integrated mobility, efficiently connecting public transport (trains, trams, buses) and active mobility (pedestrians and cyclists). The current work, carried out by the CFL, includes the reorganisation of train platforms beneath the hub.

A large-scale operation took place on the same day: a 600-ton crane installed 80-ton steel beams above the rails, following the installation of 30-ton beams the day before, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Mobility and Public Works confirmed.

The work is also preparing the second track of the tramway, which could not be completed last year due to land use constraints. Following an agreement in December 2023, the work has resumed and will continue until summer 2025, when Luxtram will finalise the second track for tram traffic. The two-track tramway will be operational in spring 2026.

"The Howald interchange will be the new southern gateway to our capital and symbolises our vision of urban and connected mobility, centralising public transport and facilitating travel by active modes. It is a flagship project that anticipates the challenges of tomorrow while meeting the needs of today," said Minister Backes.
