Sunday 13 December 2020 marked the official opening of the tram extension from Place de l'Etoile to Luxembourg-Gare in Luxembourg City.

On Sunday, His Royal Highness the Grand Duke, Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mobility and Public Works, François Bausch, and the Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, Lydie Polfer, together with Luxtram officials and a few official guests, officially put into service four new tram stations in the heart of the capital.

The new tram section is considered a major step in terms of transportation and the economic and commercial development of Luxembourg city centre. The public space has been completely redesigned with a qualitative rearrangement of the façade. New trees have been planted on Avenue de la Liberté so as not to impact the new networks while allowing them to develop sustainably. New energy storage technologies allow the tram to run without an overhead contact line on this new section.

The Luxtram team has been reinforced and currently counts 145 people. 28 new drivers were trained at the Luxtram driving training centre and there are now 27 trams in total.

Since the beginning of December, a new awareness campaign "Open your eyes and ears wide!" has been launched to support the opening of this new tram section.

After the inauguration in December 2017 of the first section linking "Luxexpo" to "Rout Bréck - Pafendall" and the entry into service of three additional stations in July 2018 ("Theater", "Faïencerie" and "Stäreplaz / Étoile"), the tram will now serve four new stations: “Hamilius”, “Place de Metz”, “Paräisser Plaz / Place de Paris” and “Gare centrale”.

The tram network has been extended by two kilometres and is interconnected with two new hubs of exchange. The nearly 8 km tram line now serves a total of fifteen stations, including five hubs.

The next extension is set to connect Luxembourg-Kirchberg to Luxembourg Airport and then Luxembourg-Gare to Howald / Cloche d'Or.

The tram runs daily. From Monday to Friday, the first departure from “Luxexpo” is at 04:30 and from “Gare centrale” at 04:58. The tram runs every five minutes between 05:45 and 20:00 and every eight to fifteen minutes outside these times. On Saturdays, the first tram leaves "Luxexpo" at 04:30 and "Gare centrale" at 04:58. The frequency is every five minutes between 12:27 and 18:32 and every five to ten minutes outside these times. On Sundays, the tram runs every ten minutes between 11:25 and 18:45 and every fifteen minutes outside these times.
