On Thursday 8 October 2026, the Health Directorate of Luxembourg's Ministry of Health and Social Security published its weekly overview of the evolution of major acute respiratory infections, including COVID-19, influenza (flu) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), for the week of Monday 28 September to Sunday 4 October 2026 (week 40).

Increase in COVID-19 / SARS-CoV-2 cases

During week 40, the number of positive COVID-19 cases increased from 105 to 134, up by 28% compared to the previous week. This increase follows an upward trend observed over the past four weeks. However, the number of cases remains lower than that recorded during the same period in previous years.

The viral concentration detected in wastewater also increased.

The latest available sequencing data reveals that the XFG variant (65%) and the NB.1.8.1 variant (15%) are predominant.

Increase in flu cases

During week 40, the number of flu cases reported by laboratories increased from 28 to 51, although the number of cases remains low.

During the last week, influenza A accounted for 98% of typed cases, while influenza B represented 2%.

Low level of RSV cases

The number of confirmed RSV cases decreased slightly from three to two compared to the previous week.
