Luxembourg’s Ministry of Health and the Luxembourg Society of Cardiology (Société luxembourgeoise de cardiologie) have launched an awareness campaign on the occasion of World Heart Day.

Celebrated annually on 29 September, World Heart Day aims to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease and recall the importance of paying attention to the vital organ that is the heart.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide with 17.9 million deaths each year, representing 31% of global mortality. In Luxembourg, it was the leading cause of death for women (580 deaths or 28.5% of deaths) and the second leading cause for men (557 deaths or 26.7%) in 2019. It was also the leading cause of death for people over 65 (1,024 deaths or 30.4%).

In a time when the global pandemic is the main health focus, there is the risk of neglecting our hearts, which is why the Health Ministry is placing particular emphasis on the prevention of cardiovascular disease.

This year, the ministry has joined forces with the Luxembourg Cardiology Society to launch an awareness campaign for the month of October on this subject, with posters put up in stations and bus shelters.
