Luxembourg's Ministry of Health confirmed today that it is investigating the death of a woman who had received the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine a few weeks earlier.

According to the ministry, the 74-year-old woman passed away on Saturday 10 April 2021 from a cerebral hemorrhage associated with thrombocytopenia and disseminated intravascular coagulation. She had received a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine on 23 March 2021.

The National Health Directorate is now carrying out an analysis of this case in close consultation with the Lorraine regional pharmacovigilance centre (Centre Régional de Pharmacovigilance) in Nancy (France) in order to determine the exact causes of death. The Health Directorate is also awaiting the result of the autopsy carried out on 13 April 2021 at the request of the Luxembourg public prosecutor's office.

The pharmacies and medicines division of the Health Directorate reported the case to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) through the Eudravigilance system.
