On Thursday 7 January 2021, representatives of the Luxembourg government as well as the ANIL, the national association of nurses, participated in an interministerial working meeting via video conference.

This exchange, which follows a first meeting between the Prime Minister and the ANIL last November, brought together Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, the Minister of Health, Paulette Lenert, the Minister of Family and Integration, Corinne Cahen, the Minister of Higher Education and Research, Claude Meisch, and the Minister of Social Security, Romain Schneider, as well as representatives of the nuses' association.

The meeting allowed the parties to deepen discussions and propose concrete actions to face the labour shortage in the sector. Priority areas of work include an attractive offer of training which is also in line with the growing complexity of the profession as well as the promotion of the profession and its image among the general public.

Prime Minister Xavier Bettel was optimistic about the rapid implementation of a new training model for nurses. He stated: “The health crisis we are experiencing has exposed the enormous importance of the nursing profession in an operational and quality health system. We warmly thank nurses for their unwavering commitment. Faced with the shortage of healthcare personnel that we encounter, we have an obligation to train more qualified personnel in the Grand Duchy. The adaptation and upgrading of the training offer through the introduction of a bachelor's degree for certain categories of nurses - the BTS level would also be maintained - is one of the avenues being studied".

The Prime Minister concluded: "Work will continue within the ad hoc inter-ministerial committee set up by the government in council on 24 January 2020. The government in council will still rule in the first quarter of this year. Fruitful discussions with ANIL will continue”.
