The Luxembourg Red Cross has reported that it has received 220 blood donations since its call for solidarity last Friday.
According to the Red Cross, teams at the Blood Transfusion Centre took 130 samples on Friday and a further 90 samples on Monday. Additional appointments with over 730 donors have also been scheduled for the coming weeks.
The Red Cross thus stressed that the challenge now is to maintain these efforts over time. Indeed, the storage time of blood varies according to its components: the platelets only keep for five days and red blood cells can be stored for 42 days, while plasma can be kept for several months. Consequently, a drop in donations could quickly lead to a strain on platelet stocks once again.
To participate, it is important that donors respond to the invitations sent by the Blood Transfusion Centre's teams. These invitations are made according to stocks and needs by post, email or via telephone.
