Luxembourg Unemployment Climbs to 6.4% as Resident Jobseekers Increase

On Monday 20 July 2026, Luxembourg's employment agency, ADEM, reported that 19,619 resident jobseekers were registered as available for work at the end of June 2026, while the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 6.4%, despite an increase in job vacancies.

The number of resident jobseekers stood at 19,619 as of 30 June 2026, an increase of 1,733 people (+9.7%) compared with the same period last year. The increase was particularly pronounced among highly qualified jobseekers (+19.1%) and was observed across all age groups, especially among those aged 30 to 44 (+12.8%).

The largest increases in demand were recorded in secretarial and administrative support, information technology, accounting and management, and banking professions.

New registrations of resident jobseekers increased by 3.0% year-on-year, with 2,478 people registering in June 2026 compared with 2,406 in June 2025.

The number of resident jobseekers receiving full unemployment benefits stood at 9,904 at the end of June. Those with professional redeployment status receiving either waiting or professional allowances totalled 1,573. A total of 4,605 residents benefited from an employment support measure, representing an increase of 3.4% compared with June 2025.

For non-resident jobseekers, ADEM recorded 4,144 registered individuals at the end of June 2026, an increase of 25.2% year-on-year. Of these, 2,421 held external professional redeployment status, making them eligible for financial assistance from ADEM under the same conditions as residents. This group increased by 9.7% over one year.

The second category consists of non-residents who register voluntarily with ADEM and are not eligible for financial assistance. This group accounted for 1,723 people at the end of June 2026, an increase of 55.9% compared with the previous year.

Among non-residents with external professional redeployment status, 1,057 received full unemployment benefits in June 2026, while 1,849 received waiting or professional allowances.

In June 2026, employers reported 3,167 job vacancies to ADEM, up 7.2% year-on-year. The number of available vacancies at the end of the month stood at 7,081, an increase of 3.1% compared with June 2025. The strongest growth in vacancies was recorded in construction design and engineering, industrial cleaning, social, educational and community work, and paramedical care.
