On Wednesday 19 May 2021, the LCGB and OGBL trade unions signed a sectoral job protection plan for taxi companies in Luxembourg.
Due to its economic dependence on the event, tourism and hospitality sectors, the taxi sector has been strongly impacted by the consequences of the COVID-19 health crisis. According to the unions, the prohibition or limitation of gatherings and professional, private and public events, as well as a drop in air travel demand and thus the need for airport trips, and the disappearance of evening customers due to the curfew, have called into question the need for taxis. This shutdown negatively impacted the turnover of companies in the sector.
In order to avoid harmful effects for employees and to safeguard their livelihoods, the social partners have concluded a sector-based job protection plan for a seven-month period, i.e. from 1 June to 31 December 2021 (subject to approval). This plan includes the following measures:
- access to voluntary part-time work;
- access to a voluntary career break (unpaid leave);
- access to short-time working;
- pre-retirement adjustment;
- temporary loan of labour (only on a voluntary basis);
- non-replacement of departures;
- encouragement of training for internal and external employees;
- prohibition of redundancies for economic reasons during the duration of the job protection plan.
