Western drama, 114 mins, 16+
A Western set in the 1960s in Montana and North Dakota. A slow (particularly in the early stages) yet intense drama about a retired sheriff, George Blackledge (Kevin Costner), and his wife Margaret Blackledge (Diane Lane). Their son - who lives with his wife Lorna (Kayli Carter) and young boy in his parents' home in Montana - dies from an accident on their land. A few years later, Lorna remarries and they move out, and eventually the new family suddenly disappears. The boy's grandparents are afraid and upset that they will not see their grandson again and set out to try and find him.
Featuring some visually stunning landscapes and cinematography, the well-crafted story follows the elderly couple asccross the state border into the wild hillbilly area of North Dakota (which is actually Alberta in Canada...) where they come across various characters including Peter Dragswolf (Booboo Stewart), an American Indian who lives alone, and Blanche Weboy (Lesley Manville), the fearsome matriarch of a clan into which Lorna Blackledge has (re-)married.
Listen out also for the cello-based soundtrack.
The film has earned its 16+ certificate thanks to a couple of extremely violent scenes involving guns and axes in which the film morphs from a slow-paced drama to a Western thriller. It also tackles topics such as child abduction and spousal abuse.
Diane Lane give a stunning performance as a grieving grandmother who warms to her daughter-in-law and longs to see her grandson grow up.
