To raise public awareness about bee protection and biodiversity conservation, the City of Luxembourg (VdL) has announced it is offering a freely accessible, educational beekeeping walking trail through the capital.
The bee and biodiversity awareness project has been implemented by the VdL in collaboration with natur musée (National Museum of Natural History- MNHN) and the Neumünster Abbey Cultural Exchange Centre (neimënster), with the support of the National Archives, Luxembourg’s National Roads Administration and Servior - Op der Rhum.
As reported by the VdL, the trail is approximately 2.5 km long and features thirteen information points, allowing both children and adults to learn about the world of bees. At various stops along the trail, information panels in English, French and German provide explanations on urban biodiversity, along with a wide range of bee-related topics relating to different species of wild and honeybees, their habitat, lifestyle, reproduction habits, products produced from the hives and the issue of bee mortality.
The educational trail is designed to present the characteristics of bees, hornets and wasps - noted by the VdL as “essential to a healthy and balanced environment” - in a fun and instructive way. Visitors can also discover a house for wild bees and insects and closely observe the daily comings and goings of the various insects.
The trail features the following stops:
1. Luxembourg City Tourist Office (LCTO): The Bee and the Wasp;
2. Place de Clairefontaine: Biodiversity;
3. Rue du St Esprit: Planters and Flowerbeds;
4. National Archives: Bees in the City of Luxembourg;
