On Monday 31 March 2025, Luxembourg's Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity announced a new quality seal for the production of wild perennial plant seeds.
According to the ministry, the demand for native wild perennials is increasing: they not only look beautiful, but also provide food and habitat for many pollinators and promote biodiversity.
Under the new certificate Zertifikat Wëllplanzesom Lëtzebuerg-Stauden (Certificate Wild Plant Seed Luxembourg Perennials), wild perennials with regionally-specific quality of origin will be produced and sold according to ecological criteria from this year.
Since 2018, with funding from the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, seeds of native wild plants from certified regional cultivation have been produced in Luxembourg and sold in mixed packets. From this year, wild perennials will also be cultivated: for this reason, a set of rules for the certification of wild perennial production was created last year - these include quality and sustainability criteria. The quality seal of this certification gives the buyer the assurance that the criteria are met and that the perennials are of regional origin quality from Luxembourg.
Four Luxembourgish nurseries are currently diligently cultivating colourful flowering and pollinating wild perennials to offer them from spring. These perennials are used in the design of perennial beds in private gardens and in public areas in municipalities.
