On Friday 20 September 2024, Luxembourg's Water Management Authority announced that swimming is permitted once again at all beaches until the end of the month.
Following the proliferation of cyanobacteria (blue algae) detected in the upper Weiswampach lake and accompanied by the presence of high concentrations of toxins produced by these cyanobacteria, the situation has returned to normal. Consequently, swimming and recreational and sports activities are once again permitted in these locations.
The Water Management Authority specified that the drop in temperatures has led to a sharp decline in the cyanobacteria biomass and monitoring carried out by the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) has confirmed the dissipation of the blooms. This development of the situation thus puts an end to the alert on toxic risks at the level of public health linked to the presence of the blue algae.
The bathing season ends on 30 September 2024 and will start again on 1 May 2025.
