On 18 and 19 July 2015, the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate (MEF) will meet in Mondorf-les-Bains to discuss climate negotiations.
The 17 major economies participating in the MEF are Australia; Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, the UK and the USA, as well as additional participating countries.
MEF is an initiative of the US State Department intended to facilitate discourse among major developed and developing economies, in order to achieve a successful outcome in climate negotiations. In view of the Paris Climate Conference in December 2015, four meetings of MEF will take place this year.
The meeting in Mondorf-les-Bains will be chaired by two key figures of the US government: Caroline Atkinson, Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics; and Todd Stern, Special Envoy for Climate Change at the State Department, the President’s chief climate negotiator. The members participating in MEF will be represented by their ministers.
On Sunday 19 July 2015, a press conference will be held in the “Symphonie” room in Mondorf-les-Bains' Domaine Thermal. Here the two key figures of US climate change policies will discuss the outcome of the MEF session and the US expectations for the Paris climate talks happening in December 2015.
