On Thursday 16 January 2020, Kateřina Sternbergová, chargée d'affaires a.i. of the Czech Embassy in Luxembourg, led a wreath laying ceremony on the Square Jan Palach in Luxembourg's city centre in the presence of several members of parliament and other dignatories.

The ceremony was held to commemorate the 51st anniversary of the death of Jan Palach, a 21 year-old history and political economy student who, on 19 January 1969, set himself on fire in Wenceslas Square to protest against the invasion of Czechoslovakia to crush the Prague Spring.

During yesterday's ceremony, both Kateřina Sternbergová, who was standing in for the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Luxembourg, and Colette Mart, Alderwoman of the City of Luxembourg, gave speeches in honour of this sacrifice before laying flowers and inviting those present to place candles in front of the Jan Palach commemorative plaque on Square Jan Palach.

The ceremony was followed by a reception at the Czech Embassy in Luxembourg.
