Luxembourg’s Small Theatres Unveil 2026/27 Season Programmes

On Wednesday 16 September 2026, Théâtre du Centaure, Kasemattentheater and Théâtre Ouvert Luxembourg (TOL) jointly presented their respective programmes for the 2026/2027 season at a press conference.

The conference was held at Théâtre du Centaure, a 50-seat vaulted cellar in Luxembourg-Ville. Presented in French, Luxembourgish, German and English, it was attended by representatives of the three theatres, as well as many of the directors and artists behind the upcoming productions.

Théâtre du Centaure Artistic Director Myriam Muller opened the press conference by reflecting on the place of human beings in society, a theme running through the theatre's upcoming season. She also highlighted the importance of continued institutional support for culture and artists in Luxembourg.

“Unlike our European neighbours, they have not abandoned culture, they have not abandoned artists. On the contrary, we have never been as supported as we are now,” she said.

The three theatres then were invited to present a mixture of new creations, returning productions and guest performances, spanning theatre, dance and music.

The 2026/2027 season will feature two English-language productions, as well as one wordless production:

- Seven Methods of Killing Kylie Jenner by Jasmine Lee-Jones, an English-language production directed by Anne Simon, returning to Théâtre du Centaure from Tuesday 20 to Sunday 25 October 2026. The production, which was already staged at the Centaure during the 2025/2026 season, explores Black identity, beauty ideals, racism, queerness and the influence of social media;

- SO MA TO / 走馬灯, a non-verbal theatre-dance production directed and choreographed by Japanese choreographer Sayoko Onishi, at Kasemattentheater on Tuesday 27, Thursday 29 and Friday 30 October 2026. The production follows two elderly women revisiting fragments of their lives through body expression and live music rather than spoken language. 

Sayoko Onishi explained that “somato” is the name of a traditional Japanese revolving lantern which projects images and shadows and can also refer to the flashback of one's entire life in its final moments. “This performance is talking about memories, fragments of our entire life,” she said, adding that the work was inspired by the films of Hayao Miyazaki and their intertwining of inner life, humanity and the spiritual world;

- Songwriter's Night, featuring Luxembourg-based musicians Blue-ish, Abanda and Smokey Hillbert, at Kasemattentheater on Friday 21 May 2027. The English-language musical evening will bring together different singer-songwriter styles ranging from folk-pop and world music to electro, jazz and blues.

Théâtre du Centaure's 2026/2027 season also includes:

- Oublie-moi, based on Matthew Seager's In Other Words and directed by Anne Brionne, from Thursday 14 to Sunday 17 and Wednesday 20 to Sunday 24 January 2027. The production centres on a young couple confronted with early-onset Alzheimer's disease and explores memory, identity, communication and love;

- La Ménagerie de verre (The Glass Menagerie) by Tennessee Williams, directed by Myriam Muller and performed in French, from Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 and Wednesday 17 to Sunday 21 March 2027.

Kasemattentheater's programme will include:

- Die unheilige Johanna von Orléans by Luxembourgish author Rafael David Kohn, directed by Sara Goerres, returning to Kasemattentheater on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October 2026 following previous performances and touring dates;

- Die Zumutung der Liebe, a staged homage to Ingeborg Bachmann directed by Liss Scholtes, on Wednesday 30 September 2026;

- Léon a Lena by Georg Büchner, directed by Anouk Wagener, on Wednesday 16 and Friday 18 December 2026 and Tuesday 12, Thursday 14, Friday 15 and Saturday 16 January 2027;

- Quelques-uns le demeurent (Ham, Fritten an Zalot) by Jeff Schinker, directed by Marion Rothhaar, on Friday 5, Saturday 6 and Tuesday 9 February 2027;

- Das Stillleben by Caren Jeß, directed by Sara Goerres, on Wednesday 17, Friday 19, Saturday 20 and Tuesday 23 to Thursday 25 March 2027;

- Nostalgie 2175 by Anja Hilling, directed by Antoine de Saint Phalle, on Wednesday 21, Friday 23, Saturday 24 and Tuesday 27 to Thursday 29 April 2027;

- Lieder aus der Kulisse, conceived and performed by Anna Marie Schneider, on Tuesday 4 May 2027.

TOL's 2026/2027 programme under the theme “Resist” includes:

- Les Crapauds fous by Mélody Mourey, directed by Véronique Fauconnet, on Thursday 12 to Saturday 14, Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 and Wednesday 25 to Saturday 28 November 2026. Inspired by real events, the play follows Polish doctors who create the appearance of a typhus epidemic during the Second World War in an effort to protect people from deportation;

- Hanokh !, directed by Maximilien Blom, on Thursday 21 to Saturday 23 and Thursday 28 to Sunday 31 January, as well as Wednesday 3 to Friday 5 February 2027;

- Big Mother by Mélody Mourey, directed by Véronique Fauconnet, returning to TOL from Sunday 14 to Wednesday 17 March 2027;

- Providence by Neil LaBute, directed by Pauline Collet, on Thursday 18 to Saturday 20 and Tuesday 23 to Thursday 25 March, as well as Thursday 8, Friday 9, Thursday 15 and Friday 16 April 2027;

- La ville ouverte by Samuel Gallet, directed by Aude-Laurence Biver, from Wednesday 28 to Friday 30 April and on Sunday 2 May 2027;

- La Vérité by Florian Zeller, directed by Antoine de Saint Phalle, from Thursday 3 to Saturday 5, Wednesday 9 to Saturday 12 and Wednesday 16 to Saturday 19 June 2027;

- Pourquoi les riches by Isabelle Bonillo, from Thursday 24 to Saturday 26 June 2027.
