Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain has announced it will organise an English-language film conference on Wednesday 24 April 2024 at the Cinémathèque (17 Place du Théâtre, Luxembourg-Ville) from 19:00 to 22:00.

The conference is set to take place in the context of the group exhibition Images at Work. A lecture by the exhibition's curator, Laura Lux, will be followed by a screening of medium-length works A New Product (2012), Westinghouse One, Two & Three (2019) plus Company Line (2009) and NО̄ (2003).

Since the Lumière brothers recorded their employees leaving the factory with the cinematograph, the camera lens has become a crucial witness to the evolutions, histories and politics surrounding labour. This film conference will explore the Lumières' beginnings and their early fascination with the depiction of work while showing three recordings of their iconic Workers Leaving the Factory (La Sortie de l'Usine Lumière à Lyon, 1895).

The lecture will then discuss the legacy of the Lumière brothers, the criticism voiced against their naturalist portrayal of labour and their influence on contemporary documentary practices, including on the directors of the works that will be screened after the talk: Harun Farocki, Kevin Jerome Everson and Sharon Lockhart.

The entrance fee is €3.70, €2.40 for those under eighteen and €1.50 with a Kulturpass. Registration is available at the following link: https://ticket.luxembourg-ticket.lu/eventim.webshop/webticket/seatmap?eventId=36639.
