On Monday 25 April 2016, Land Rover Belux will be supporting the relief organisation 'Drive Against Malaria' in its aim to raise awareness of the disease which poses a serious threat in Africa.
25 April marks World Malaria Day, a chance to open the world's eyes to the staggering facts and figures of this disease, which today affects more than 214 million people. Children under the age of five make up the majority of 400,000 deaths caused by malaria, particularly in remote areas of Africa.
Since being launched in 1998 by David Robertson, Drive Against Malaria has been providing relief to isolated tribes in Africa suffering from malaria and treating all children to help prevent the spread of the disease. Mr. Robertson drove through 27 countries to raise awareness of this detrimental diseases which claims 3,000 young lives everyday, as well as has serious social, educational and economic consequences for communities affected. In 1999, he shipped his Land Rover to South Africa to embark upon the African leg of his journey where he visited hospitals schools and health centres and held press conferences.
It was in late 1999 that David Robertson encountered former Dutch television presenter Julia Samuel, who subsequently began to document David's every mile driven and milestone passed, becoming operational director of Drive Against Malaria in 2007.
Land Rover Belux has provided more than €250,000 to the association since 2014 as part of Jaguar Land Rover's global goal to sustainably improve the living conditions of 10 million people by 2020.
