On Sunday 13 September 2026, Stëmm vun der Strooss held a farewell event at its social restaurant at 112 Rue du Canal in Esch-sur-Alzette, serving around 300 meals to clients ahead of the restaurant’s move to new premises nearby.
The final day at the Rue du Canal premises was marked with a kebab lunch made with chicken and halal beef, served with vegetables and sauce, as well as chocolates, small gifts and a raffle for clients. Meals at the social restaurant cost a symbolic €0.50, while soft drinks and juices are available for €0.25, with coffee and water provided free of charge.
Mustapha Haddar, who is responsible for the Stëmm vun der Strooss social restaurant in Esch-sur-Alzette, told Chronicle.lu: “Actually, this is the last day here at 112 Rue du Canal. From Saturday 19 September, we are going to move to 118 Rue du Canal. We also wanted to celebrate this with the clients because we have welcomed them here for three years, and also to thank them for their loyalty.”
Around fifteen people were involved in serving clients during the farewell event, including Haddar’s manager Christophe Contier, Stëmm vun der Strooss Director Alexandra Oxacelay, a member of the organisation’s board and four members of the educational team, alongside other staff.
“We have all kinds of people. We have regulars and some elderly people who have been coming here for a long time. It may surprise you, but we have many Luxembourgers here at the social restaurant in Esch. Recently, we have also seen new people because life has become more expensive and many are having difficulty making ends meet,” said Mustapha Haddar. He added: “I am very, very happy to be here serving people. I get up easily in the morning to come and work here. You can see from the number of people here that they really need Stëmm vun der Strooss, and I think the organisation does everything it can to help people on a daily basis.”
Mustapha Haddar noted that clients in Esch can also access other support services, including showers, clothing services, hairdressing and assistance from a social worker.
The new premises at 118 Rue du Canal will offer slightly more seating capacity, allowing the restaurant to accommodate two to three additional tables.
From Monday 14 to Friday 18 September, the restaurant will operate on a takeaway-only basis while furniture and equipment are transferred to the new premises. Clients will be able to collect takeaway meals from the organisation’s main building at 32 Grand-Rue in Esch-sur-Alzette between 11:45 and 15:30.
