LUkraine, a Luxembourg-based non-profit organisation, has launched a fundraising campaign aimed at providing energy-generating and storage devices, such as electric generators and batteries, for the Kherson region in Ukraine.
As Ukraine faces its third winter in an ongoing war, power outages have become a daily struggle, affecting homes, hospitals, schools and essential services. LUkraine noted that this winter promises to be especially difficult, with Ukrainians enduring power disruptions ranging from four to eighteen hours per day, according to UN forecasts. Despite these challenges, the Ukrainian people remain resilient, continuing to work, study and carry out everyday tasks in the dark.
This initiative aims to provide necessary energy solutions to families, schools and hospitals in the Kherson region, where a lack of power has become a critical issue. LUkraine has thus called on the public to support this campaign and help ensure that essential services continue to operate, and to bring light to the Ukrainian people.
Donations will help: keep schools open, allowing children to continue their education; power healthcare facilities, enabling doctors to provide critical care and perform life-saving surgeries; provide light and warmth to homes, ensuring that families stay safe during the harsh winter months.
"No contribution is too small", said LUkraine. "Every donation, no matter how small, brings light into the darkness". The non-profit also emphasised its commitment to transparency, noting that it will provide regular updates on the delivery of generators and their positive impact in Ukraine.
There are different ways to contribute, namely:
- Direct donation: donate directly to the purchase of electric generators for Ukraine;
- Provide devices: if a company would like to donate specific energy-providing devices such as generators or batteries, LUkraine will provide the necessary specifications and ensure safe delivery to the people who need them most;
- Collective donations: help LUkraine create a larger impact by sharing resources.
The fundraising campaign will run until the end of December 2024. For further information and to make a donation, visit https://espoir.lukraine.org/
Elaborating on the current situation in Ukraine, the non-profit recalled that the country continues to endure relentless attacks on its energy infrastructure. One of the largest of these strikes occurred on 22 March 2024, when Russia launched a coordinated attack of 88 missiles and 63 drones, targeting critical energy facilities. By late 2022, an estimated 40% of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure was heavily impacted, and by mid-2024, the country was operating at only a third of its pre-war electricity generation capacity. These attacks have made it even more difficult for Ukrainians to survive through the winter months, noted LUkraine.
Founded in 2014, LUkraine is a non-profit association based in Luxembourg, dedicated to supporting Ukraine and raising awareness about the ongoing crisis. The organisation has sent ambulances, life-saving medical equipment and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Additionally, LUkraine provides psychological, humanitarian and integration assistance to refugees in Luxembourg, helping them through language courses and job search support.
