Médecins Sans Frontières Luxembourg (MSF) (Doctors without Borders) recently announced the decision to delete its X (formerly Twitter) account.
According to MSF, the organisation is committed to providing life-saving medical care and promoting values of integrity, transparency and truth. MSF reported that the decision comes as the platform X has evolved, "marked by a surge in misinformation, disinformation, and a lack of control over harmful speech, which jeopardises the fundamental principles MSF defends".
The organisation continued by saying that "the uncontrolled spread of false information on topics as serious as humanitarian crises, medical care, climate change, and the health risks that result from them is a real risk to the proper understanding of our work and can have dramatic consequences for the safety of our patients and our teams on the ground".
MSF said it considers that the platform X no longer provides the necessary guarantees to moderate this content responsibly. The MSF’s X account will no longer be updated, but former tweets will be archived.
The organisation expressed its gratitude to all who supported them on X (Twitter) over the years. MSF Luxembourg remains present on other social media platforms.
