On Friday 4 October 2024, Luxembourg non-profit organisation Aide à l’Enfance de l'Inde et du Népal (AEIN) launched an urgent call for donations to support flood relief efforts in Nepal.

As AEIN explained, Nepal has been struck by a devastating series of floods and landslides, resulting in over 190 deaths, hundreds missing and widespread destruction across the country. The catastrophe, triggered by relentless rainfall, has severely affected the Kathmandu Valley and several provinces, including Bagmati and Koshi. More than 300 homes have been destroyed, with sixteen bridges washed away, leaving communities isolated and in desperate need of assistance.

One of the hardest-hit areas is the AEIN project area of Bethanchowk, a rural municipality in the Kavrepalanchowk District, where a massive landslide has displaced numerous families, destroyed homes and washed away fertile land that was the primary source of income for many households. The non-profit added that survivors face immediate shortages of food, clean water and shelter, "making swift action imperative" to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

In response to this emergency, AEIN has launched an urgent relief effort through its local partner Association for Rural Development (ARD) Kavre to support the affected communities in Bethanchowk. The non-profit is urgently calling on its supporters to donate and help it provide life-saving supplies to those in need.

AEIN said its primary objective is to provide immediate disaster relief materials to the affected population in Bethanchowk. This includes distributing the following essential items to support 150 vulnerable families: food supplies (rice, lentils, cooking oil, salt); shelter materials (blankets, quilts, bedsheets); hygiene kits (soap, sanitary pads, water purifiers).

AEIN added that its local partner ARD is coordinating closely with local authorities and stakeholders to ensure aid reaches those most in need "promptly" and "effectively".
