On Friday 19 July 2024, Caritas Luxembourg confirmed it had filed a complaint for misappropriation of funds on 16 July 2024.
The amount was estimated at €60 million. Throughout the investigation into what appeared to be a case of significant internal embezzlement, Caritas noted it will cooperate fully with the judicial authorities to clarify the situation quickly. The charity added that this will be done while respecting the confidentiality of the investigation.
Luxembourg’s Ministry of State noted it became aware on Wednesday 17 July 2024 of the allegations of embezzlement of funds within Caritas Luxembourg. Since the denunciation by Caritas Luxembourg, a judicial investigation has been underway to determine the facts.
Without prejudice to the legal consequences of these investigations, the Government emphasised that it strongly condemns any embezzlement of funds, an action all the more troubling as it occured in an entity working for the most vulnerable and deprived populations in Luxembourg.
The Ministry of State concluded it is in close contact with the managers of Caritas Luxembourg to identify solutions that can ensure the continuity of activities for the most deprived people in Luxembourg. The report stressed that the State “reserves all rights to take appropriate measures depending on developments”.
