On Tuesday 18 April 2023, the City of Luxembourg (Ville de Luxembourg - VdL) donated five city buses for the educational needs of the Ukrainian government.
The donation was carried out by the City of Luxembourg, represented by Mayor Lydie Polfer and aldermen Patrick Goldschmidt, Maurice Bauer, Simone Beissel and Laurent Mosar in the presence of Anne Calteux, Representative of the European Commission in Luxembourg, and Claude Radoux, municipal councillor and Luxembourg’s Honorary Consul to Ukraine.
With this gesture, the City of Luxembourg joined the public and private entities that have responded favourably to the solidarity campaign “School buses for Ukraine” organised by the European Commission. As soon as they arrive in Ukraine, the former AVL buses will help guarantee safe school transportation for children or to ensure evacuations in the Kherson region in southern Ukraine.
The 5 GX 127 type buses of the Heuliez brand are reduced gauge buses (Midibus) in a short version (9.42 m). According to the City of Luxembourg, the buses are small, manageable and comfortable, and thus combine the required qualities for travelling in the narrow streets of a city. Their delivery to Kherson, a city seriously affected by Russia’s occupation, was organised jointly with the European Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) in Brussels. The Kherson Regional Council will assign the buses to the “Center for the Service of Educational Institutions of the Kherson Region”.
