Five Luxembourgish NGOs have issued a joint public warning in light of rising charity collection scams.
As the holiday season (the most generous time of the year) approaches, Amnesty International, Greenpeace, Handicap International, Médecins Sans Frontières and UNICEF have called on the public to be vigilant in the face of fraudulent charity collections carried out in their names.
The NGOs have recalled that, in addition to misleading the public, these fraudulent practices deprive the organisations of valuable and much-needed funds for the people and causes they support.
The five charities also recalled that none of them collect cash donations. When their teams go door-to-door or are present in the street, they request bank transfers or direct debits from donors. In addition, each "collector" is dressed in the colours of the association, with its logo, and wears a personal identification badge that can be viewed on request.
