Caritas Luxembourg has launched a new campaign focusing on access to clean water in Laos.
Laos, located in Southeast Asia, remains one of the poorest countries in the world. In rural areas, the standard of living of the population is even lower than in cities and diseases are common, especially those related to the consumption of non-potable water. Even today, these diseases are responsible each year for the premature death of 6,000 people across the country.
In response, Caritas Luxeambourg has attempted to facilitate access to clean water in these communities. For several months, tanks equipped with water filters have been distributed to the poorest families in the region in which the NGO works. The principle is simple: the teams fill the tank with water from the source, before purifying it with a ceramic filter. The water is then ready for consumption, cooking or hygiene purposes. This is also a relatively moderate-cost method, since the tank and the filter cost €40 in total.
