The Luxembourg Bankers' Association (ABBL) recently announced that it is introducing, together with its members and with the support of Victor Buck Services, a new universal payment slip ("titre universel de paiement" - TUP) from Monday 2 June 2025.

The ABBL noted in a press release that thousands of companies, shops and institutions in Luxembourg collect invoices or subscription payments, hundreds of associations receive donations and families and friends money. This would not be possible without secure and efficient banking and payment services.

While almost all of these transfers are now made using cards, direct debits or credit (primarily initiated via digital channels such as online banking), in Luxembourg, about 1.2 million transfers are still initiated each year via TUPs. The ABBL said these were still used because they are straightforward (e.g. certain data is often pre-filled) or by individuals who are less familiar with online banking services.

To facilitate the processing of transfers via TUPs, ABBL member banks and payment service providers (PSPs), supported by Victor Buck Services, have worked to adapt the TUP slip. The information it contains will now be better structured, allowing for more efficient and secure processing, according to the ABBL.

Moreover, from 9 October 2025, users will be able to indicate whether they want their transfer to be treated as an instant payment once it has been processed by their bank.

The new ISO20022-compliant TUPs will be introduced from 2 June 2025 and will be used in parallel with the old slips in circulation (1 and 2). The short version (3) will no longer be supported after this date. From 1 January 2026, only the new TUPs (1) will continue to be accepted.

Retail customers will receive new TUPs from their bank or payment service provider. The ABBL has advised business customers, public authorities and organisations to contact their printer as soon as possible, or to download the data and instructions for producing the new TUPs from the ABBL website: https://www.abbl.lu/en/professionals/toolbox/payment-standards/titre-universel-de-paiement-tup
